Possible wildlife sightings: Burrowing owls, giant anteater, southern tamandua (small anteater), capybaras, white-tailed deer, armadillos, puma (rare), anaconda, red howlers, capuchins, various species of ibis such as scarlet ibises and buff-necked ibises, species of herons including whistling herons and night herons, various hawks such as savanna hawks, kites, falcons, parakeets, macaws, swallows, flycatchers including fork-tailed flycatchers, yellow-crowned parrots, various woodpeckers and wood creepers, jabirus, various hummingbirds, agoutis, spectacled caimans, red-footed tortoises, hoatzins, turtles, iguanas, roseate spoonbills and more. itinerary briefDay 1 Arrival in the morning or at midday, welcome at airport & transfer to traditional llanos farm Hacienda La Independencia (25 mins drive) for an introduction to the region. We can either embark on a horseback ride or on a walk to explore the savannas and gallery forest and stalk wildlife. In the evening we drive to our accommodation, hotel Villa Lisseth (15 mins). incl. lunch & dinner Day 2 After breakfast we pack up for a couple of nights out in the plains: natural reserves, more farms and even more wildlife await! Our trip takes us to a natural reserve about 120 km away, where we enjoy lunch before heading out on foot and by paddle canoe to observe groups of capybaras, caimans and colourful birdlife until the sun sets. In the evening we drive to nearby guesthouse Posada El Diamante (15 mins) on the shore of Rio Pauto. incl. breakfast, lunch, dinner Day 3 After breakfast at the guesthouse we drive for about an hour through picturesque countryside keeping our eyes peeled for colourful birds in the wetlands. Our destination is a tucked-away little farm, "La Candelilla", on the river shore where we meet owner Seco. We take short walks to observe howler monkeys along the river shore and learn about the Llanos' lifestyle and culture in Seco's lived-in open air museum. Return to Posada El Diamante in the late afternoon. incl. breakfast, lunch, dinner Day 4 We can embark on an sunrise walk to stalk wildlife around the posada. After breakfast we then pack up and head out to a large natural reserve for a day of jeep game driving, some walks if desired. We return to Yopal after having enjoyed the sunset in the plains.
